Youth homelessness is not just an issue that affects the individual – it has a profound impact on the entire community. From economic strain to increased demand on social services and the justice system, the effects of young people experiencing homelessness are far-reaching. Platform Youth Services is committed to tackling this crisis head-on, providing young people with the support and resources they need to build a brighter future.
The Widespread Impact of Youth Homelessness
-
Economic Costs
Youth homelessness places a significant financial burden on the community. Emergency accommodation, healthcare services, crisis intervention, and law enforcement efforts all require funding. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 45,000 young Australians aged 12-24 experience homelessness each year. Without intervention, many of these young people face chronic homelessness, increasing their reliance on government assistance and community resources. Early intervention programs like those offered by Platform can reduce these long-term economic impacts by helping young people find stability before their situation worsens.
-
Strain on Social Services
Young people without a safe place to call home often rely on emergency housing, food relief programs, and mental health services. As a result, local organisations and government services face overwhelming demand. Youth homelessness can also disrupt education, leading to increased dropout rates, limited employment opportunities, and generational cycles of poverty. By providing stable accommodation and support services, Platform helps reduce the pressure on these systems, allowing resources to be distributed more effectively.
-
Impact on Public Safety and Well-being
When young people are forced to live on the streets or in unsafe environments, they are more vulnerable to crime – both as victims and, in some cases, as a means of survival. Homeless youth are at a higher risk of experiencing violence, exploitation, and substance abuse. Additionally, communities with high rates of homelessness often experience increased concerns about public safety. By providing safe housing and support networks, Platform helps prevent young people from engaging in risky behaviours while fostering a safer and more inclusive community.
-
Breakdown of Community Well-being
A strong community thrives on the well-being of its members. When young people are struggling, the entire community feels the impact. Homelessness can lead to social isolation, making it difficult for young people to build connections and contribute positively to society. Platform recognises the importance of fostering a sense of belonging, offering programs that empower young people to engage in education, employment, and community activities.
How Platform Helps Alleviate Youth Homelessness
Providing Safe and Stable Housing
At Platform, we believe that every young person deserves a safe place to call home. Our crisis and transitional accommodation services provide young people with stability while they work toward long-term housing solutions. Recently, we partnered with Link Wentworth Housing to launch ‘75’ – a dedicated home in Penrith that accommodates up to six young people while they pursue their education goals. Similarly, Lemongrove House has been converted back into a supportive home for young people, offering them a stable environment for up to 12 months as they transition to independence.
Offering Holistic Support Services
Platform takes a comprehensive approach to youth homelessness, addressing not just the need for shelter but also the underlying issues that contribute to housing instability. Through our case management services, we help young people develop life skills, access mental health support, and engage with education or employment opportunities. Our team also works closely with community partners to ensure that each young person receives the tailored support they need to thrive.
Early Intervention and Outreach Programs
Preventing youth homelessness before it happens is a key focus for Platform. Our Assertive Outreach Team actively engages with young people at risk of homelessness, providing guidance and connecting them with essential services. Our Aboriginal Engagement Team ensures culturally appropriate support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, recognising the unique challenges they face.
Building a Supportive Community
Platform believes that ending youth homelessness requires a community effort. We collaborate with local businesses, government agencies, and volunteers to create sustainable solutions. Initiatives like our partnership with the Property Industry Foundation, which furnished Lemongrove House, demonstrate the power of community-driven support in making a tangible difference.
